Spicer wrote The Holy Grail over 1961-62, taking about nine months to complete all the sections.

An alleged "first" reading of the completed poem took place on August 28, 1962, at a gathering organized by Robin Blaser. However, given the fact that Spicer arrived drunk and that there was considerable tension between him and Robert Duncan (who was invited to the reading by Blaser), it is questionable whether a reading actually even took place:

So confused and disoriented became the atmospheres and personalities at this event that several witnesses denied any reading took place. Others remembered a beginning; others acknowledged the possibility of a complete reading. (Ellingham and Killian 231-2)
The Holy Grail was published in 1964 by White Rabbit Press.
